148 Edgewood Avenue

The Atlanta Preservation Center is deeply disappointed by Georgia State University’s decision to move forward with the demolition of both 148 Edgewood and Sparks Hall. These buildings hold significant architectural and cultural value—148 Edgewood, a contributing structure in the Sweet Auburn Historic District, and Sparks Hall, a mid-century modern anchor of GSU’s urban campus.

Historic Preservation exhibits and promotes the best ways to better appreciate the value of America’s historic places as definers of our national character. It is a key component for a thriving, livable community that supports varied and rich experiences.

Preservation is not about stopping progress. It is about ensuring that growth honors the layers of history that define our identity. Understanding how to retain historic character and cultural diversity should be embraced as a universal goal.

We urge Georgia State and all institutions to re-evaluate the role they play in shaping, rather than erasing, the stories of our city. Please keep reaching out to GSU’s Administration and media@gsu.edu , sharing this information, and making your voice heard.

The mission of the Atlanta Preservation Center is to promote the preservation of Atlanta’s architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes through education and advocacy.
