Grant Mansion on tour this weekend during the Historic Grant Park 40th Annual Tour of Homes

May 14, 2014

2014 Grant Park Tour of Homes LogoThe Atlanta Preservation Center will open its doors Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18, to participate in the Grant Park Neighborhood Association’s 40th Annual Tour of Homes. The tour, “A Stroll Through Time,” allows visitors to follow the evolution of the Grant Park neighborhood as it guides guests through sites in order-from the oldest to the newest. Sites featured include turn-of-the century Victorians, early 20th century bungalows, mid-century cottages, and a 2001 Queen Anne Victorian. For tickets and additional tour information, please visit the Grant Park Neighborhood Association website.

The Grant Mansion dates from 1856 and is the first stop on the tour. Visitors will enjoy the opportunity to tour the antebellum home of Col. Lemuel Pratt (“L.P.”) Grant, city pioneer, philanthropist and railroad magnate. APC’s current photo exhibition, “Preserved On Glass“, will also be available for viewing in the Drawing Room Gallery. The exhibit, produced in conjunction with the Atlanta History Center, features photographs from General Sherman’s photographer, George N. Barnard, taken during the occupation of Atlanta. The exhibition commemorates the sesquicentennial  anniversary of the Civil War in 1864.

The Grant Park Neighborhood Association has also noted APC’s efforts to promote adaptive reuse of the Memorial Corridor. As part of the Tour of Homes, APC is providing informational brochures on the Memorial Corridor and GPNA has offered a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to assist efforts in raising awareness of this important link to Atlanta’s history. Thank you GPNA for your generous support!

2014 APC Summer Camp for the Atlanta Mission and Action Ministries Atlanta

May 12, 2014

From June 2 – 6, APC’s Education Director Paul Hammock will lead a week long camp for youth from the Atlanta Union Mission and the Atlanta Action Ministries. This will be the fourth year of partnering with the Mission to provide new and positive experiences of the City and its history to these homeless youth. Attendees gather at the LP Grant Mansion each day to explore sites around the City.

Box City in Action

The number of children APC is able to serve will depend on sponsorship dollars. To sponsor a child for a week of camp requires a $300 donation, but any donation amount is welcome. At the time of this newsletter five children have been sponsored and our goal is ten. Please consider helping APC reach this goal.

We are also looking for a volunteer for the week to assist with the camp.

To donate or for further information please contact Paul Hammock by phone 404-688-3353 ext. 13, or by email at Paul@PreserveAtlanta.com.

Re:  Comments on demolition of Friendship Baptist Church

To Whom It May Concern:

The Atlanta Preservation Center is writing to express its concern over the fate of the historic Friendship Baptist Church.  As this very significant historic resource is now the property of the State of Georgia, it is our feeling that the State has a responsibility for the building’s preservation.  Friendship Baptist Church was listed on the National Register in 1976 as a contributing property to the Atlanta University Center District as detailed in a report by New South Associates.  The significant history of this property is well known.  Community support for the preservation of this building has been demonstrated.  The Atlanta Preservation Center urges you to consider alterations in planning to include the survival and adaptive reuse of this historic building.  The design of the new stadium complex would be much enriched by inclusion of historic Friendship Baptist Church, which would give context to the new project.

We appreciate your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

F. H. Boyd Coons

Executive Director

April showers bring yard work and volunteers

May 6, 2014

The month of April brought showers to Atlanta Preservation Center, along with lots of leaves, tree limbs and yard debris. Fortunately, April also brought showers of help from our friends at Oglethorpe Power! On April 30th a hardworking team of volunteers arrived with smiles and yard tools, ready to help APC with a backlog of yard maintenance.

The work wasn’t glamorous, but everyone pitched in with enthusiasm. The team tackled numerous raking and pruning projects, relocated several urns and planters, and addressed a surfeit of yard debris. Nothing dampened their cheer, whether it was the threat of rain overhead or the unexpected discovery of a garden snake in one of the planters!

The Oglethorpe Power team was a huge help to APC and we’d like to thank them for their generous assistance!

Thank you Oglethorpe Power!

If your company or organization participates in volunteer projects and would like to help out, please contact us for more details!
