Atlanta Was Celebrated!

Decennial Phoenix Flies

The phoenix is a mythical, flying creature that is born from the ashes of its own incineration. Like this powerful creature, so too was Atlanta reborn from her ashes after the Civil War. The phoenix has been a part of Atlanta’s seal and has served as her symbol since 1887. In creating a celebration of Atlanta’s living historic fabric, the Atlanta Preservation Center looked to this magical creature.

The Phoenix Flies: A City-Wide Celebration of Living Landmarks was created in 2003 by the Atlanta Preservation Center as a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the dramatic rescue of the Fox Theatre, an event that changed Atlanta’s preservation outlook forever. During its history the celebration has presented upwards of 775 events and provided more than 15,000 free opportunities to individuals to experience Atlanta’s rich history. For the Decennial Phoenix Flies there are over 200 events and more than 5,000 opportunities to enjoy Atlanta's rich history.

The Phoenix Flies could not be accomplished alone. It is a collaborative effort brought to the public through Preservation Partners with the support of sponsors and individuals. Preservation Partners are individual organizations in the City that have taken on the mission of improving the City’s character and quality of life through historic preservation. This year we welcomed 13 first-time Partners and acknowledge the commitment of long time Partners. These 70, old and new, were presented as a part of Phoenix Flies, creating a period of time in our great City when our assets and complex history were celebrated and strengthened to the benefit of all.
